The burns unit of the Militair Hospitaal Koningin Astrid (Queen Astrid Military Hospital) at Neder-over-Heembeek near Brussels has an excellent reputation all over Europe for the medical treatment of burns. Recently it has been entirely renovated and equipped with the latest technologies.

In association with WYCOR (contractor from Wetteren), Promat n.v. has helped create an aesthetically-pleasing and fire resistant finish for this unit.

The specialist burns unit forms part of the military hospital and is located on the 6th and 7th floors of the building. Clearly this medical centre is not meant exclusively for military purposes, but rather also has an important role to play in civilian accidents and catastrophes such as the explosion in Gellingen in July 2004.

Both floors have been completely renovated and rearranged. The administrative units and meeting rooms are located on the 6th floor, while the 7th fl oor has been specially equipped to receive patients, provide first aid and dispatch patients to, the right unit depending on the gravity of their injuries. The patient rooms, which are equipped with the latest technology and monitoring systems, as well as an integrated sanitary unit, are also located on this floor.

Burn patients are treated in specially equipped units such as special bathrooms, where their wounds can be rinsed thoroughly, and physiotherapy units, where the patients’ muscles and joints are exercised in order to prevent stiffness.

In order to meet the stringent requirements for these units, the partitions have been built using MASTERIMPACT®-RH.

In addition to its high fi re resistance, MASTERIMPACT®-RH also guarantees excellent moisture and mechanical resistance.

Located on the fl oor halfway between these two identical units are the rooms for the nursing staff and the pharmacy, both of which are equipped with state-of-theart technology. Each patient room can be monitored both visually and audibly by means of cameras and microphones. Furthermore, the temperature, atmospheric humidity and pressure in these rooms can be controlled from the nursing unit. The pharmacy is fully computer-controlled.

The fire resistance of the nursing units is guaranteed by using Promat SYSTEMGLAS® fire-rated glazing systems.
