Nobody gets it in his head to drill a hole in the bottom of a ship, but an opening in a fire-resistant wall, nobody apparently worries about it.

However, the fundamental premise of modern fire protection is based on the principles of compartmentation. Every building is designed into several fireproof or fire rated compartments, to prevent or slow the spread of fire and smoke from one compartment to another.

In every application, the importance of fire stopping - sealing any gaps in fire resistant constructions - is vital to maximize its ability to save life and property. Such gaps include service penetrations through walls and floors, either due to poor workmanship or left for structural movement.

Concealed spaces or cavities in the construction of a building provide ready route for smoke and flame spread. This is particularly so in the case of voids in, above and below the construction of a building, e.g. wall, floors, ceilings, roofs and facades. As any spread is concealed, it presents a greater danger than would a more obvious weakness in the fabric of the building.
