If it was a ship, it would certainly sink ...

Nobody gets it in his head to drill a hole in the bottom of a ship, but an opening in a fire-resistant wall, nobody apparently worries about it.

However, the fundamental premise of modern fire protection is based on the principles of compartmentation. Every building is designed into several fireproof or fire rated compartments, to prevent or slow the spread of fire and smoke from one compartment to another.

In every application, the importance of fire stopping - sealing any gaps in fire resistant constructions - is vital to maximize its ability to save life and property. Such gaps include service penetrations through walls and floors, either due to poor workmanship or left for structural movement.

Concealed spaces or cavities in the construction of a building provide ready route for smoke and flame spread. This is particularly so in the case of voids in, above and below the construction of a building, e.g. wall, floors, ceilings, roofs and facades. As any spread is concealed, it presents a greater danger than would a more obvious weakness in the fabric of the building.

It is important to note that every service passing through fire resistant building elements reacts in a different way in the event of fire, so there is no single system, solution or product that will protect all services.

What is the ideal firestopping for you?

Factors for consideration when determining the correct specification to ensure a wall or partition will provide the required fire performance include:

  • Fire resistant period
  • Integrity and/ or insulation requirement
  • Type of wall, floor penetration or linear gap

Promat offers a full range of products and solutions for a variety of fire stopping applications.

Promat PROMASEAL® and PROMASTOP® Range

As global technical fire expert, Promat has the PROMASTOP® and PROMASEAL® range of firestopping products is one of the most comprehensive in the industry. It is comprised of a number of sealing solutions, from intumescent and silicone sealants, through unique fire stopping collars and wraps.

Firestopping systems such as these have a proven track record of sealing the penetrations found in buildings during construction, such as power cables, plumbing and heating pipes, ventilation ducts, movement joints etc to increase the fire safety. Every service passing through fire resistant building elements reacts in a different way in the event of a fire, so there is no single solution or product that will protect all services. The Promat PROMASEAL® and PROMASTOP® ranges are designed to offer specific fire protection for individual penetrating elements. The products have been tested to the highest standards, manufactured using the highest quality materials and are third party accredited under the UL (Underwriter Laboratories) scheme.

Compartmentation of buildings is thus the basis of passive fire protection. The objective of this is to ensure that in the event of a fire, the users can leave the building safely via the escape routes designed for this purpose, that the emergency services, firefighters can fight the fire in a safe manner and that assets can be safeguarded.
